The River and Water in San Antonio
Nature provides us with a lot of incredible opportunities that can work for our betterment if only we can be innovative enough to utilize them. Natural features such as swamps, tropical forests and deserts are a danger to the community that live around them. The mentality that swamps are a breeding ground for diseases or deserts are scorching furnaces can be changed through coming up with creative ways of altering the nature of such environments so as to work in our favour. The residents of San Antonio have demonstrated such zeal to reverse the ever flooding San Antonio River into an economic hub. (Porter 3)
The human population is ever increasing. The primary sector that has been affected by this boom is nature. There are many cases where people clear forests for settlement, divert rivers for industrial use, and poach elephants for economic gain. This careless handling of nature should not be the case since the symbiotic relationship between nature and man can result in a lot of benefits. While in most parts of the world the masses are busy dumping residential and material waste into rivers, (Harte 1) the residents of San Antonio City have a sentimental attachment to San Antonio River. The river is a true picture of how human beings can smoothly blend with nature displaying “waterfalls, lily ponds, stone stairways, and trestle bridges.” (Harte 2)
It is not always easy for the residents near a river to join hands to transform it into a part of the community. Many individuals will link the river to its negative impacts on them. This was the case with the residents of San Antonio initially: The River was a source of perilous floods. The community had to come up with a lasting solution to the menace. Moving away was not an option since the climatic conditions in San Antonio were very favorable given the steady temperatures. (Harte 3)
Despite the fact that a certain feature may have adverse impacts on those around it, there are always the conservatives who would not hear of a plan to alter the state of the physical feature. The few individuals in San Antonio saw the bigger picture. They planned to construct a dam at the trunk of the river and tame its banks. Unfortunately, they faced opposition from various quarters. There is, therefore, need for, civic education so as to elaborate on such measures to every member of the community so as to have a consensus. Mr. Hugman, the city architect, played his role by advising the involved stakeholders on the economic benefits they were bound to reap if they changed the scenery of the river into an appealing form. (Harte 5)
Change that calls for a whole group of people requires commitment and the technical know-how. There is need to draw clearly the plans for the altering of the features. There ought to be coordination between the propellers of the project and the subjects who offer the financial and manual support. In the case of San Antonio, For instance, they had to carry out research on the species of trees that would be planted by the river. An elaborate scheme was drafted so as to ensure the debris and dirt did not clog the river. (Harte 5) With all other plans in place, the river had a reservoir at its upper trunk. Furthermore, they widened the river banks and controlled the meanders so as to reach a wider range of the inhabitants for the purpose of irrigation. (Porter 8)
In conclusion, it is true that despite the challenges that natural features offer, we can turn them for our benefit. It is the task of the leaders of a given community to see to it that all the natural endowments yield the maximum value to the residents. In cases where the opposition is stiff, government policy can affect the change. This was the case with the Spanish Missionaries in San Antonio who forced the Indian workers to construct the dam and ditches for irrigation. (Porter 2)
