In the article, language and literacy knowledge and understandings, by Hudson illustrates various aspects of language and literacy learned by children at their early age. The findings state that literacy not only entails writing and reading. People also learn through oral language, observation, drawing, visual, and critical literacy through the use questionnaires and analysis. According to study, Literacy forms a critical part of a child’s development process which enables them to understand, analyze and communicate with the environment effectively. During his study, Hudson is tested using all the aspects of language and literacy, listed above, to quantify their impact on child development.
It can be observed that each aspect have a different influence. For instance, children use observation to name and label different things based on what their see. Likewise, visual imagery literacy allows children to communicate their feeling and views using different colours to draw different images. Children use different materials and images to create different meaning which expresses their mind. For example, the educator read a favourite book to Hudson and his friends and later asked them to make a drawing of their best character. From the drawing made by Hudson, it can be seen that he loves drawing by using wavy and straight lines to draw. When asked about what he has drawn, he calls it a boat on the motion. The drawing includes circles at the base of the boat which symbolizes wheels.
Under human literacy development, drawing is considered to be the first step towards learning how to write. Children use drawing to communicate their mind. Same to Hudson, when asked to draw, children easily retain the images of things they have observed and love compared to the things they hate. They draw such images easily to communicate their feelings. Children tend to draw differently based on their understanding and analysis of their observations.
The use of shapes, lines, and scribbles when drawing effectively prepare the children to write and read when they join the formal school setup. Furthermore, the use of Information technology, children expand their knowledge about drawing. They develop the will to apply different techniques to improve their drawing skills. These children gain more confident to communicate themselves through drawing which is a good progress in the development of reading and writing literacy. Parents and educators should support their children by providing the necessary drawing resources as a formal way of introducing them to formal reading and writing.
As indicated in the article the different ways of communication such as the use of music, dance, movement, drawing, storytelling, drama and media should all the incorporated in literacy development. With the advancement of technology, all these aspects can be found in one place. Therefore, children exposed to information technology and digital media during their early age possess more literacy skills compared to those were not exposed. Therefore, parents and educators have a major role to play when it comes to literacy development in their children.
Lastly, the last aspect of literacy development as discussed in the article is the use and understanding signs and symbols. Hudson was tested under the two aspects. The findings stated that Hudson had developed an understanding of signs and symbols. For example, After observing animals in the farm, Hudson was able to give names to the signs made by the animals. He could also make a drawing representing different symbols. For example, Hudson drew round shapes to represent wheels. Conversely, Hudson could compare and differentiate between appearances and shapes. The findings help to support the notion that the development of a child’s literacy is influenced by his/ her peers, parents, home and community. Therefore, children should be exposed to signs and symbols at an early to assist in the effective development of their literacy level.
