3000 words. Your final project must be a rigorous, in-depth analysis of a historical question built around some aspect of music. It must consult at least 4 secondary sources (preferably scholarly ones) and 8 primary sources (this should include songs but can also include contemporary press accounts, interviews, autobiographies, film, etc.). The time frame is the 1950s through the 1980s; within those parameters, your choice of topic is wide open. You may build on something discussed in class or explore another phenomenon that interests you.
