First, pick a literary element or device that you think is important to the story/poem/play (see Literary Terms and Movements handout).

Submit a 250 word (min.) analysis of a literary work assigned this week. To do this:
- First, pick a literary element or device that you think is important to the story/poem/play (see Literary Terms and Movements handout). - Create a thesis analyzing the importance of the term to the literary work. Ex: Modernism is important to Eliot's poem because… - Analyze (rather than summarize) the text. Don’t just restate what happens; instead, make an argument about how the term is relevant to the text. - Use cited quotes from the text as support to substantiate your analysis (required). - Use APA format. No research is required unless you need to look up the literary term; emphasize your own thoughts on the literary device or element in the work; do not rely on a source to tell you how the device is important to the text.
Potential Topics: Each week I will offer some suggestions for the weekly journal topics. You do not have to write about these topics, but you do need to write about a text from the current week. You should also write about a term that reasonably corresponds to the text and time period. For instance, you wouldn't write about Modernism until week 3 because it's a literary movement that began with in the early-mid 20th century (and week 1 is full of early American texts). - Analyze the figurative language in either Edwards or the creation stories - Analyze the irony in Franklin's writing. - Analyze the point of view of the Columbus letters. Note that he writes in 1st person. How does this affect the reliability/credibility of the story/details he provides. Are there moments where he is trying to persuade his reader(s) to do something in his best interest? Are there moments that seem exaggerated or embellished? Do you trust the account in his 1st person point of view?
Remember, you may research the terms from the literary terms and movements handout, but please do not research how the term applies to the text. This will lead to you regurgitating ideas (boring) and potentially plagiarizing. I want your original analysis!
