INTRODUCTION to the textbook, which raises questions we might ask about art or architecture: How old is it? What is its style? What is its subject? Who made it? Who paid for (commissioned) it? Terms were introduced: Form & Composition Material & Technique Line Color Texture Space Perspective Foreshortening Proportion & Scale Carving & Casting Relief Sculpture Architectural Drawings If you have any questions about the terms discussed in the Introduction let’s start by clarifying those which may have been unclear. It can help to use a dictionary to clarify these terms, too. The DISCUSSION homework for this week: READ CHAP. ONE. Select just ONE work form the reading in Chapter One, and write a short paragraph about it FIRST using the TERMS outlined above (and discussed in the Introduction to the textbook). SECOND, ask yourself some of the QUESTIONS outlined above too, and ANSWER those questions here in the discussion. If you can draw any connections between these two sections, for example, what it was made from or how it was made, and when it was made, by what culture, etc., then you may CONCLUDE your Discussion submission with any thoughts or questions. We are reading about the distant past and finding a connection to our present; for example, one of the first subjects in Chap. One is that of Iraq’s cultural heritage.
