Written Activity Homework

Written Activity

This activity requires you to answer three questions. To answer these questions, you will need to use evidence from reliable journal article sources. This does not include the textbook but can include any of the articles provided to you on the portal. Each question also requires you to use the STAR format to reflect on your skills and abilities. You will learn this format in your Week 7 tutorial. As a guide, each response should consist of a minimum of two paragraphs and 400 words.

Question 1: The modern workplace requires staff who have excellent written and oral communication skills. Why?

  • Reflect on a time you used your communication skills and achieved a successful outcome.

Question 2: Why is teamwork is a valuable workplace skill?

  • Reflect on a time you demonstrated excellent teamwork skills and achieved a successful outcome.

Question 3: Critical thinking is a valuable skill but many people do not understand what it is. Explain what critical thinking is and why managers would want you to have this skill.

  • Reflect on a time you demonstrated your critical skills and achieved a successful outcome.

Compilation Activity

An excellent professional portfolio will contain additional items that show employers your knowledge, skills and abilities. You need to select a number of items that demonstrate your employability. You can choose any items you like but they all need to demonstrate either your knowledge, skills or abilities. Attach those items at the end of your portfolio.

Some suggestions are:

  • Samples of your best work (this needs to be related to the job you are applying for, e.g. if you are an editor, show your editing work, a photographer, show your photos, a leader, show the article written about you in the organisation’s newsletter)
  • References from people who can comment on your skills and abilities
  • Transcripts of your university results
  • Awards you have received
  • Certificates from university programs such the Mentor and Ambassador programs here at Griffith College
  • Examples of successful team work (sporting teams for example)
  • Positive evaluations you have received
  • News items (if you are lucky enough to have been interviewed)

Don’t forget that examples can come from hobbies, volunteer work, sport or the community. You don’t have to have a job to find suitable examples. Anything you are involved in will often offer you the opportunity to gain skills and you can use these as examples of your competency.
